Most motorists in Alexandria are well-versed in most of the basic tenets of vehicle maintenance and safety, but one often overlooked aspect are gaskets. These oft-misunderstood components are vital for the performance of a vehicle’s crucial key systems and should never go unappreciated nor misunderstood.

Gaskets are type of seal intended to prevent escaping or mixing liquids as well as to keep air where it belongs, or out of places it doesn’t. They’re usually made of flexible metal (steel preferably), with a rubbery coating. Among the most important ones are the oil pan (to keep oil in place while the crank shaft moves), the cylinder heads (to pad the gap above the engine block) and the intake/exhaust manifold (to regulate air flow and temperature).

Failing gaskets are spotted by their cracking, unwanted gaps and buildup of goo. This can be reduced with regular oil and fluid changes as well as being attentive to engine temperature.
